How to Use PYQs for UPSC Mains Answer Writing
Reading model answers can improve awareness, but writing improvement requires timed output, review and repetition. PYQs provide a reliable starting point because the demand is examination-tested.
Choose the right practice unit
Use a single question for a skill drill, three to five questions for a topic session, a sectional paper for integration, and a full paper for stamina and time allocation.
Respect marks and time
- Set a realistic time limit before starting.
- Do not turn every 10-mark answer into a 15-mark answer.
- Track completion separately from score.
- Review where time was lost: recall, structure, examples or writing speed.
Use a transparent self-review checklist
- Was the directive answered?
- Was the introduction relevant and brief?
- Did the body cover more than one dimension where required?
- Were examples, data or constitutional references used appropriately?
- Did the conclusion answer the question rather than merely stop the essay?
Convert review into the next test
Choose one or two priority corrections for the next session. Trying to improve every weakness at once usually produces no measurable change.
