PYQ Strategy
How to Analyse UPSC Previous Year Questions
PYQ analysis is not counting how many times a keyword appeared. It is the process of understanding what the examiner expected, how the demand was framed and what preparation decision should follow.
Start with the exact wording
Read the complete question before assigning a topic. A familiar keyword can distract from the real directive. ‘Discuss’, ‘evaluate’, ‘critically examine’ and ‘comment’ require different levels of judgement and balance.
Record the year, paper, marks, directive, primary topic and related themes. That small structure makes later comparison much easier.
Map the question to the syllabus
- Identify the narrow syllabus phrase directly tested.
- Add one primary topic for reporting.
- Add related topics when the question is cross-cutting.
- Avoid creating a new topic for every minor wording variation.
Compare demand across years
A theme can recur without repeating the same question. Compare whether later questions moved from description to evaluation, from a national view to a local example, or from a general principle to an institutional problem.
Finish with an action
- Revise a concept when knowledge is missing.
- Collect examples when the answer lacks evidence.
- Write a timed answer when understanding exists but expression is weak.
- Build a sectional test when several connected topics need integration.
