PYQ Strategy

How Many Years of UPSC PYQs Should You Study?

There is no magical year count, but there is a sensible order. Recent papers reveal current framing; a longer period reveals recurring foundations.

Use the latest five years for current emphasis

Recent papers help you understand current wording, balance between static and contemporary dimensions, and the level of specificity expected now.

Use roughly ten years for pattern confidence

A ten-year window reduces the risk of treating one unusual paper as a permanent pattern. It is usually wide enough to identify recurring themes while remaining manageable.

Go further back selectively

  • Political theory and constitutional themes with long continuity.
  • History and geography concepts that remain stable.
  • Essay themes whose philosophical value is not time-bound.
  • Optional-subject thinkers, theories and canonical debates.

Do not confuse recurrence with prediction

PYQs help prioritise and understand examination demand. They do not guarantee that a repeated theme will appear again in the same wording or year.
